22-24 November 2013 in Oakland, CA

One weekend in November, a diverse group of creative, passionate people will meet, form teams & get to work in an energetic, global, face-to-face design event. In just 48 hours, we'll ideate, research, and prototype brand new products, services, and programs around the theme of sustainability.

The Oakland Sustainability Jam is the local edition of the Global Sustainability Jam, a non-profit activity organized by an international network of service designers and sustainability aficionados. These individuals all share the common belief that collaborative tools and design processes can be used to create meaningful change.

Everyone is welcome at the Oakland Sustainability Jam! You don't need to be a designer or have experience with service design to Jam. In fact, we're seeking a diverse group of participants to achieve a healthy balance of skills and perspectives. You'll also be supported throughout the weekend by designers, mentors in sustainability, and group facilitators.

What is a Jam exactly?

Co-designing + problem solving + having fun

The Oakland Sustainability Jam is a 48-hour co-creative session where people come together in cities around the globe to solve problems, generate ideas, and create new sustainable products, services, and programs.

Imagine a Jam session in music. You come together, bringing your instruments, your skills, your open mind.  Someone sets up a theme, and you start to Jam around it. You don't overanalyse it, you don't discuss it to death, you Jam.

Together, you build something which none of you could have built alone.

Our Team

Guide + Help + Inspire

Inspired by the Global Sustainability Jam founders, Markus Hormess and Adam Lawrence of Work•Play•Experience, we wanted to help make a jam happen in Oakland.

The Oakland Sustainability Jam is organized by a diverse group of service designers, user experience strategists, design thinkers & volunteers. We all share a passion for imagining and building meaningful solutions to today's challenges.

We are delighted to be working together to gather students, makers, design practitioners, researchers, programmers - everyone and anyone interested - to create services and products that could quite possibly change the world.
